Welcome to the ruins of Annwn. The once populated hills of this massively multiplayer online game are now void. They call it a Dead MMO. A polygonal mess of PS1-era graphics, empty plains, and dungeons that grow and grow and grow from the inside of the planet's wounds. Up above, the eye of the sad god glares its chromatic light down upon the remaining players, while its tormented hand contorts into magical shapes, rarely crossing paths in their messy orbit. When they do, the shadow magic that powers the game explodes with its ancient might.

.dungeon//remastered is the second edition of the award-winning TTRPG, .dungeon, released in 2021. The game wears the aesthetics of gamefaqs walkthroughs, player screenshots, and cryptic dev notes, meant to evoke the sense that this book is the culmination of a community delving into the mysteries of this dead mmo to pry out anything of use.

To play the game you assign dice to your stats, rolling them against obstacles, angry mobs, and combative players. The higher number wins and accomplishes their goal while the loser gets closer to a Game Over. You'll gather roles, which are equippable classes that grant bonuses to your die rolls or give you special abilities. With those, along with your unique, meta-power known as an Aspect, you'll brave the dangers of this dead world.

We tried to experiment with the form of this TTRPG, putting player-introduction first and foremost. The book is laid out so that the first thing you see is a tutorial adventure. Reading/playing the adventure will teach everyone at the table how to make a character, when/how/why to roll the dice, and teach them the basics of exploring this virtual world.

The same goes for the Server Host (or the GM in other games). Reading/running the tutorial adventure will teach you the rules, how to create challenges, and all the basics to continue the game beyond the tutorial.

The rest of the game is full of tables, lists, and ideas for doing just that. Continuing the game. It features tools for building a hex map of the surrounding area. It has a chart for creating dungeons procedurally using just a d10. There's rules for rebuilding settlements and brining life back to the game's world. Along with enough gear, magic, and unique items to sprinkle throughout the world as treasure.

At it's core, .dungeon is a game about interacting with the other living and breathing people that are still clinging to this abandoned mmo. One of the last sections of the book includes tables for creating these Players Unknown (or PUGS). Including tips, hints, and ideas for sparking conversation, fleshing other players out, and even helping them fulfill whatever it is they're still here to accomplish.

.dungeon//remastered, like its predecessor, is a game with a defined ending. The entire party tracks a shared pool of HP, called Sync. This represents their bonds to the game. One of my favorite parts of this system is that you can never know when your game will come to an end. It creates this desire to make every moment count. To have as many meaningful experiences as you can before it's time to move on

This book is 136 pages, black & white, and features art from several sources, including the public domain, Charlotte, Thomas Novosel, Micah Anderson, and Aekashics. Hardcover copies of the book are available here. Or grab a community copy if you can't afford to purchase a pdf.

hi there

Just wondering if any more community copies will be available?

Kind regards

I purchased the physical version of this, would it be possible to get a PDF copy of it? I wasnt sure if the physical version came with it or not

If you don't mind me asking, what motivated the drastic shift in aesthetic from the first version?

(+2)(-1)

I backed this on kickstarter and ran the tutorial dungeon over the weekend and the game was awesome! I really recommend this to everyone, the game is quick, fast and fun and allows for a lot of silly casual roleplay. I really like the ease of play and the attention to the setting. I wrote more of it on my blog.

Can we get a PDF version of the character sheet that can be filled out with pc? We play online and not everyone has a printer

That's something I can work on if I find the free time to do so. But until then, some of the great people in the community have made some. If you join the discord they've been made free to download.

I played this game for the first time the other day, and even after just completing the Tutorial it has easily become one of my favorite ttrpgs. It’s so easy to pick up and so hard to put down.

A Great looking tabletop rpg for fans of Ready Player one, .hack series, Sword art online , Digimon series, Log horizon. Great for those who are looking for a slice of life adventure/story , or experience  their childhood memory back in the 2000-10s of living in a mmo or a dying/dead mmo.  MMO players rejoice!

Love this book! I really wish it had a table of contents in the front :(

A nod from one .hack fan to another.

One other question and it’s a little weird: Do you think this game could be soloed? Has anyone ever tried using solo tools with this game?

(+2)

It could definitely be ran solo. There are a lot of tables for generating everything from NPCs, dungeons, and hex crawls.

Haven’t gotten around to reading this yet but does this version contain some of the zines from the previous game or are those still separate?

Also thank you for adding community copies for both games I’m looking forward to reading and trying them out when I have the chance.

The zines are separate still due to them using the old stats for mobs.

Amazing game.  Purchasing Hard cover of this revised edition.

This game is really something special. The way my brain lit up as the tutorial played out feels electrifying! It's cruel of you to release something this awesome before I've gotten Songbirds 3e to my table, Snow... please, don't stop <3

This game looks spectacular!  Reading through the vivid descriptions and the fun mechanics I am very excited to start running this soon!

(+1)

Is there a form-fillable char sheet anywhere?

(+4)

Not at the moment but I can work on one soon

(+4)

I've been wanting to work on a game-related project for my portfolio (I'm a recently unemployed software engineer). Would an online character creator be cool for me to tinker with? I don't see licensing or community use stuff anywhere.

(+1)

Yeah that'd be rad! my licensing is usually cc-by so go wild with it. lemme know if there's anyway I can help

(+2)

Awesome, I'm starting my project outline and wireframes. The design origin of the computer UI stuff in the book is MacOS 9 right?

(+1)

I believe so, yeah! The layout artist came up with that stuff so I'm not positive haha

(+2)

The hardcover looks awesome! Any ETA for when they will ship and if it will be in time for Xmas?

(+1)

should be ordered next week and get here end of month

(+2)

Excited to give this a try!

(+4)

I have been hyping this game up to all of my friends, I can't wait to get our first session up and running!

(+3)

I can't wait to dive into this!

(+3)

Excitement intensifies!

Hey!
I have been looking forward to the release of this remaster since I played the original last summer, and went I checked the page today, I was so excited it had launched!
Unfortunately I currently don't have the income right now to buy it, so I'm looking forward to the community copies releasing!
Please, keep making great games so I can get that feeling of playing with my friends in middle school alive!
